Sproat Lake Volunteer Fire Department (SLVFD)

Watch for fire department members in the valley May 13th to the 19th as the Alberni Valley will be hosting the British Columbia Fire Training Officers Association (BCFTOA) Annual Training Weekend and Conference! There will be multiple facilities used throughout the valley as well as in Nanaimo and Comox. Throughout the week, fire fighters and officers from across BC, will be engaged in conferences and training scenarios at either North Island College, Best Western Plus Barclay Hotel, Alberni Valley Multiplex, City of Port Alberni Fire Hall, Beaver Creek Fire Hall and Cherry Creek Fire Hall.  Our own fire fighters will have great opportunities to take part in most events where they will acquire greater skills, which will benefit our community.  If you happen to be driving by, you might just see some of our fire fighters at one of these facilities!

The SLVFD address signs are progressing well – but there are still some homes that are difficult to locate (ie. older faded address signs)!  Remember, if we can’t find you, we can’t help!!  Contact us at 250-724-1777 and leave a message or send an email to officeadmin@sproatlakefire.ca if you would like to purchase a sign.

The Alberni Valley Community Forest (AVCF)

The AVCF has submitted our Forest Stewardship Plan (FSP) renewal and it is now posted on our web page. The updated FSP is submitted according to the requirements of the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA).  It has a five-year term and contains maps of each Forest Development Unit and the results and strategies designed to meet legislated forest management objectives. The updated FSP contains text edits, clarifications to several results and strategies including community watersheds, and an amendment to late free growing dates.

The public may review the updated FSP with the associated maps between April 7th and May 9th at the AVCF Office, 7500 Airport Road, Port Alberni.  Please call 250-731-7377 to arrange a viewing time.  The plan can also be viewed online at   http://www.communityforest.ca/forest-stewardship-plan.

A public open house will be held on Monday, May 2nd from 11:00 am to 7:30 pm at the AVCF Office (at the airport). The AVCF Manager, members of the Board of Directors and the planning forester will be available to discuss the updated FSP contents with interested parties.

Sproat Lake Community Hall Sees Continued New Life With Pickleball!

A group of residents continue to play pickleball in the Sproat Lake Community Hall daily. There are a number of men’s, ladies’ and mixed groups that are playing in the hall and soon will be playing outdoors as the tennis courts are being resurfaced for summer outdoor play. For more information on how to join the game, call Linda or John Bowers at 250-724-3626.

Garbage and Abandoned wharves a continuing problem for the community.

If you are replacing an old wharf this spring-summer, please ACT RESPONSIBLY!! It is illegal to dispose of old wharves on Crown land and the Province may charge removal to the owner! Please have old wharves disposed of in an environmentally safe and sensitive manner. Clean up efforts are not enough to protect our water and environment. Thanks to many volunteers in 2015 who cleaned up the shoreline of dispersing Styrofoam pellets and debris on Sproat Lake and Great Central Lake.
